Orlando, Florida. A serious car accident critically injures a motorcyclist. Clifford Mayo, 29, of Orlando, Florida was critically injured and transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center after an accident involving a pickup truck. The pickup truck, driven by Mervin Butts, 34, of Orlando, Florida, was parking in a closed left turn lane on State Road 50 as part of a construction zone. Butts was apparently employed in the construction operation. Thereafter, Butts attempted to re-enter the roadway from the side of the road but instead went directly into the path of the motorcycle driven by Mayo. May and the motorcycle collided with the pickup truck on its right front side. Mayo was ejected from his motorcycle. Mayo was driving westbound on State Road 50 approachine State Road 436.
Motorcycle accidents have a tendency to involve more serious injuries than car accidents. Further, insurance laws are different when it comes to motorcycle accidents. For car accidents in Florida, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is the first line of defense in paying medical bills after an accident. However, PIP coverage is not required for motorcycles and is not always sold to motorcyclists who purchase insurance. Instead, the at-fault motorist's liability starts from the first dollar of damages in a motorcycle accident.
