Serious Collision with Semi-Truck
Two men suffered serious injuries in an accident with a semi-truck. The accident occurred on Saturday at 12:55 a.m. as a 2001 GMC Yukon struck the rear end of a semi-truck at the intersection of U.S. Highway 92 and Neptune Road in Auburndale. The driver of the Yukon was Jesus Torres Chavez. Chavez is suspected of driving while intoxicated by alcohol. The two men who suffered serious injuries, Martin Duran and Santiago Velasquez, were passengers in the SUV that Chavez was driving.
Florida law makes it a felony to cause an accident with serious bodily injury while intoxicated. An accident like this opens the door to punitive damages against the driver. Those damages are usually not discharged in bankruptcy. With this particular accident, the driver of the Yukon may end up with a civil judgment to pay for property damages and bodily injuries to the passengers and the driver of the semi-truck.
