In the meantime, let’s take a moment to consider some of the most common types of car accidents and what damages may be recovered.
Rear-end Collisions
Rear-end collisions are a common type of accident that happens when the back of one vehicle is hit by the front of another vehicle.
Rear-end accidents are most likely to happen when drivers are following too closely (tailgating) or driving too fast to stop safely. Driving while distracted (e.g., sending text messages, changing radio stations, or talking to passengers) is another common cause of rear-end collisions.
Head-on Collisions
Head-on collisions occur when two vehicles driving toward each other hit one another, head to head.
Head-on accidents can happen when someone drives the wrong direction down a one-way road or enters a freeway from the exit ramp. A head-on collision may also happen on roads without barriers between opposing directions of traffic.
Side-impact or T-bone Accidents
Side-impact collisions, commonly called “T-bone accidents,” happen when the front of one vehicle collides with the side of another, forming a T.
T-bone accidents usually occur at intersections, when one vehicle drives through a red light or stop sign as the vehicle with the right-of-way proceeds through the intersection. This results in one driver colliding head-on into the side of the other vehicle, often causing serious injuries for the driver or front passenger of the impacted vehicle.
Sideswipe Collision
Sideswipe collisions happen when two vehicles are driving alongside each other and one of them grazes the side of the other vehicle.
Sideswipe accidents commonly occur during lane changes, usually when one driver changes lanes without properly checking their blind spots. Distracted driving and driving under the influence can also cause people to drift out of their lane, sometimes resulting in a sideswipe accident.
Damages from Car Accidents
There are many factors that can affect the severity of a car accident besides the type of collision. Because of this, even a seemingly minor accident can cause serious injuries. A car accident attorney can help those injured in a car accident recover financial compensation for damages such as:
- Medical expenses, including physical therapy and rehabilitation
- Lost wages
- Loss of future earnings if injuries are permanent
- Emotional distress
- Pain and suffering
- Vehicle property damage
